URB (September 99)
Alex J. feat.Soul Theory
"Body and Soul"

…this track is a primetime, filtered disco number with a soulful vocal layered throughout-reminiscent of something Doc Martin or Mark Farina would play in a dark, sweaty warehouse. The B-side rocks a bit harder style with the "soul 2 soul sub dub," and it comes complete with instrumental and an acappella tool for those with deconstrustive intent.

Examples of songs titles invoking the Garage experience are Jovonn"s"Garage Shelter"
(Nite Stuff Records,1994); Cevin Fisher's
"Like We Used To" (Maxi Records 1996);
Byron Stingily's "Back to Paradise"(Nervous Records,1998). A post-Garage continuation of this phenomenon is exemplified by a 12-inch entitled
"Body and Soul," a direct reference by producer
Alex J. to the late-1990s' party most closely styled
To emulate the Garage experience(Nervous Records,1999)

"Everything is Beautiful"
(Sugardish)

Alex definitely has a knack for a deeper, darker
Sound. While his style may vary I'll put money
Down that one of his mixes is going to be bangin'.
Such is the case with "The Dwellar". Starting with
A minimal beat, Alex gradually builds with repetitive monotonous, boucing synths while adding to the drums and dropping in the vocal
"Higher," slowly working the track into a frenzy.

Alex J. consistently comes up with phat house
Beats, and usually finds a way to create a trippy
Vibe that keeps minimal but remains interesting.
"Deeper Concentration" is a prime example.
The few elements used include some flowing air sounds with eerie tone, a girl saying "Deeper",
and a swinging house beat which is all this track
needs nothing more and nothing less.

Tracks making noise back then were Aphrohead's "In the Dark We Live", E.G. Fullalove's smash hit "Divas' To the Dancefloor", Headrushes "Underground"
and DJ Dukes remix of "It's our Turn" by Project 4007. Other sensations come from now industry giants, DJ Pierre, Cevin Fisher, Alex J and Junior Vasquez.
All these tracks were raw, pumped and larger than life and luckily, most of these fellow dj's and producers survived the fallout and now reign supreme today.

This engaging display of hip-hop savvy gets translated into various house tongues by Jason Nevins, Stonebridge, Robbie Rivera and Alex J. The majority of the mixes on this double-disc, vinyl pack revolve around a beat-pounding, bass-laced back track and they vary from hard house-driven dubs to tempting synth-laden deep dance scorchers - interwoven by rhymes by Run of Run-DMC.

I'm guessing this is a new New York label, because this is the first time I've received anything from them. Though the B-side progressive-almost-trancer "The Dweller" is capably produced, it just doesn't fit my personal tastes. However, the A-side "Everything Is Beautiful" surprised me, a dreamy, almost ethereal, yet simple, house track, with gorgeous female vox, lovely organ stabs and synth washes, and a swift 125 BPM kick. That woman's voice is utterly haunting-I can hear this one getting some good attention from the deep/garage heads.
